The Historic and Botanic Garden Trainee Programmes (HBGTP) are part of the Historic and Botanic Garden Bursary Scheme (HBGBS) and are supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF). The Scheme's lead partner is English Heritage Trust and we work with our partners the National Trust, the Royal Horticultural Society, Capel Manor College, and the Professional Gardeners Guild.
All placements are salaried positions.
The aim of a 2 year placement is to provide practical work experience within an historic and/or botanic garden. The 2 year programme provides the means to achieve the RHS Level 3 Diploma through a series of residential study blocks led by Capel Manor College. In addition, trainees undertake 2 fully funded skills training certificates and a unique Heritage Garden Module (see website for details). Trainees on this programme may be required to pay a contribution towards their subsidised college tuition fees.
The selection process will take into account the applicant's:
-Previous practical experience
-Interest and commitment to work in the sector
-Ability that a placement could develop or enhance
-Self- motivation and ambition
Please make sure to include full details of all horticultural qualifications (name and awarding body) in your application.
Shortlisting will be conducted by HBGBS staff, our partners at Capel Manor, and representatives from the host gardens. Please note that the information on your application will be shared with external representatives beyond English Heritage.
Interviews will be held at Wrest Park, Bedfordshire, on 9th and 10th May 2017. You will be required to attend for a full day, which will include a practical test, a plant identification test and a formal interview. The day will also provide you with the opportunity to learn more about the programme, particularly the academic element of the placements.
We regret that we are unable to pay expenses for interviews, although special consideration may be given for those traveling from Northern Ireland or from outside the UK.
