Modern bayeux tapestry unveiled

  • New illustration depicts the top 10 moments in English history, chosen by children across England.
  • Take part in the competition to design the final panel of the illustration.

We've worked with children's illustrator Liz Pichon to create a sequel to the Bayeux Tapestry. The artwork features the most important historic moments in England since 1066, as voted for by children across the country. These include the birth of William Shakespeare and the end of the Second World War.

Now children are invited to enter our competition to complete the tapestry by drawing the final panel: the invention of the World Wide Web. The competition opens today and runs until the end of September. The winning design will be revealed on 13 October 2016, the eve of the 950th anniversary of the Battle of Hastings.

Liz Pichon, author and illustrator of the best-selling Tom Gates series, adds:

"The Kids' Tapestry is the perfect way of engaging kids with history - not only did they get to choose the moments but they will be able to complete the story… I'm really looking forward to seeing what designs kids come up with for the final panel."

See the Tapestry

The eight metre long illustration is being unveiled today at the site of the Battle of Hastings. It will then tour 12 English Heritage sites over the summer from Queen Victoria's seaside home on the Isle of Wight to a Roman fort on Hadrian's Wall.

Liz Pichon will also lead a series of kids-only illustrator workshops at sites including Kenilworth Castle and Belsay Hall and Gardens in August, inspiring them to bring history to life with coloured crayons and pencils.

English Heritage's Chief Executive, Kate Mavor, said:

"The Battle of Hastings is one of the most important turning points in our history and brilliantly captured in the Bayeux Tapestry. But what are the major moments after 1066? Families can see The Kids' Tapestry at our castles, palaces and forts this summer and we're also calling on children to help us finish the story."
