Blue Plaques Scheme Position Statement
There has been a great deal of interest in the Blue Plaques Scheme and despite inaccurate reports, English Heritage remains committed to the Scheme and it will continue. However, our focus over the next two years will be to reduce a backlog of plaques that have already been agreed and to lay the foundations for a long-term future for the scheme that reduces the cost to the tax payer. For this reason, the scheme is being temporarily closed to new applications while we catch up with the backlog.

Hunt for Grade II buildings at risk
English Heritage has launched the Heritage at Risk Register 2012 and announced an ambitious programme to find out how the one major element of our heritage not already covered by the Register – the nation’s Grade II listed buildings - can be assessed. Adding those found to be at risk from neglect, decay, damaging alterations or dereliction to the national or local At Risk Registers would be a first step to securing their future.

Queen Victoria's private beach to open
Queen Victoria's private beach at Osborne, her seaside home on the Isle of Wight, will open to the public for the first time from Friday 27 July. "We have quite a charming beach to ourselves," Victoria wrote in 1845 and it was here that the Queen regularly bathed and where her children learned to swim.

Rare Medieval Treasures Found At Furness Abbey
An extremely rare medieval silver-gilt crozier and bejewelled ring discovered during emergency repairs to the ruins of Furness Abbey in Cumbria – one of the great monasteries of England and in the care of English Heritage – will go on display at the Abbey over the May bank holiday weekend (Friday 4 - Monday 7 May 2012). The head of the crozier or staff is particularly beautiful and is decorated with gilded silver medallions showing the Archangel Michael defeating a dragon.

The treasure hunt takes place around Birmingham on Saturday 9 July from 11am to 4pm and will require you to use your Sat Nav, other GPS device or mobile internet to find four secret historic locations.

Changes in winter opening times
Learning groups urged to book visits now for this and next summer. We are adjusting our winter opening times (November to March). More properties will be open than ever before but with a few exceptions, all our properties will only be open at weekends during the winter.

War Horse Gallops In for the Festival of History 2011
The Festival of History returns to Kelmarsh Hall, Northamptonshire on 16 & 17 July for a blockbuster weekend of clashing swords, thundering hooves and epic battles. One of the highlights this year is a replica WWI trench, recreated by a team who have been working on Steven Spielberg's latest movie War Horse.
