Dover Castle

Dover Castle boasts the longest history of any fortress in Britain. Standing on top of the White Cliffs of Dover,  the Castle commands the shortest sea crossing between England and the continent. William the Conqueror built the first castle here in 1066. Over the succeeding centuries it has been massively altered, extended and strengthened. English Heritage has two holiday cottages within the castle; Sergeant Major's House and Peverell's Tower.

The Cottages

Situated inside the 13th century round tower gatehouse itself, the romantic Peverell's Tower apartment is equipped to the highest modern standards. It also boasts a wonderful roof-tower terrace from where you can admire Dover Castle.

The Sergeant Major's House is an elegant and spacious four-storey Georgian house standing in its own grounds with expansive views to the English Channel. This used to be the home of the Battery Sergeant Majors garrisoned at the Castle, and was more recently lived in by the Custodian of the Castle.
