An initial assessment of the monument is carried out by English Heritage. This is to decide not only whether it is in the best interest of the monument to be managed via a scheduling designation, but also whether a site meets the criteria for scheduling.
If we decide to proceed with scheduling we will contact the owners of the site seeking permission to visit. We will carry out research and prepare a report and map for formal consultation.
Owners and the local planning authority are given 28 days to respond to our consultation.
We will then consider all representations made before finalising our recommendation to the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport. The decision on whether to schedule is taken by the Secretary of State.
Although we will follow this process in the majority of cases, if it can be demonstrated that the monument is at substantial risk of imminent damage or destruction, then English Heritage may choose not to notify or consult the owner or local planning authority.
