The At Risk Register

Places of worship at risk frequently asked questions - the At Risk Register.

How will Places of Worship come off the Register?

In the same way as secular buildings. The specific factors that put them at risk must have been addressed and satisfactorily resolved before they are removed. Places of worship will not come off the Register whilst works are in progress because failure to complete works can lead to them being left in a worse state than they were to start with. Equally, completion of one phase of work does not necessarily lead to them coming off the Register as they may require more than one phase of work.

How will the individual sites be included in the Register?

It is not intended that places of worship identified through the survey will be placed on the 2010 At Risk Register. However, in subsequent years, places of worship will be integrated into the listed buildings section of the Register.

For the survey, all buildings in the sample were visited and assessed as being in good, fair, poor or very poor condition using clear guidelines defining each category.  Only those identified as poor or very poor would be considered for inclusion on the Register from 2010 onwards.

No building would be placed on the Register without English Heritage's specialists making a further, more detailed evaluation and talking to those responsible for the places of worship in question.
