Mount Grace Priory is set against some of the most beautiful scenery in Britain. Situated at the foot of the Cleveland Hills, the priory (founded in 1398) was the last monastery to be built in Yorkshire before the Reformation and is regarded as the best preserved and most accessible of the 10 Carthusian monasteries in England.

It was a tough place to be. Whereas the Cistercians and other monastic orders enjoyed a life of community and were looked after by servants, the monks here lived as hermits. Each occupied a cell. Food was passed through a hole in the wall and they hardly spoke a word.

One of the cells has been reconstructed to show how it might have looked in the 15th century. This is really two sites in one because of the Manor House, which was built in 1654 from the ruins of the monks' guest house before being extended by Sir Lowthian Bell at the turn of the 20th century.

The discovery in the last five years of original William Morris wallpaper in the drawing room showcases the craftsmanship of the Arts and Craft movement. Its gardens are beautifully preserved and attract a huge variety of wildlife. It was here that Sir David Attenborough filmed his celebrated programme on stoats.

Prior's Lodge sleeps four, with views over the pond in one direction, the ecclesiastical ruins in the other - a fitting spectacle given that the house was where people came for parties and animated conversation, and the monastery was where the monks prayed and remained silent.
