Guided Tours
Abbey Habits
Have you ever wondered what it was like to be a monk at Whitby Abbey almost 1,000 years ago? Did the monks live a life of cloistered seclusion - set apart from the wider community and indeed the wider world? How did they survive the harsh winters, living on the Abbey headland exposed to the worst excesses of the weather? What were their secrets for health and happiness? Uncovering some of these and other secrets behind life at the Abbey, the 'Abbey Habits' tour aims to lift the lid on the mystique surrounding this Gothic site, which has inspired and fascinated for centuries.
Led by costumed guide Friar Benedict, played by Harry Collett, an expert in local legend and the history of Whitby town, the tour can be adapted to suit the interests of your group.
You could choose to discover the real story behind the Synod held at the Abbey in 664, whose consequences are felt to this very day; uncover the mystery surrounding one of the Abbey's former monks and the Penny Hedge; gain an insight into the life and character of St Hild, founder of the Abbey; or explore the construction of this magnificent abbey.
