Boscobel House and the Royal Oak, Shropshire

This beautiful but modest timber framed house sheltered Charles II after defeat at Worcester, the final battle of the Civil War.

He escaped capture by sheltering first in an oak tree, which became known as the ‘Royal Oak’.

He later hid in a priest-hole in the house's attic.

This Tudor castle has been transformed over the years into an elegant home and residence of the Lords Warden of the Cinque Ports.
