Introduction

Over the past decade, the formality and austerity of the 19th-century Belsay Hall, the romanticism of the grade one listed gardens and the presence and might of the 14th-century Belsay Castle has inspired some extraordinary new work from artists, fashion designers, architects and performers, in a series of special exhibitions.

Exhibitions

Extraordinary Measures at Belsay opened on May 1 2010 and included new work by internationally renowned artists Ron Mueck, Mat Collishaw, Mariele Neudecker Slinkachu, Freddie Robins, Tessa Farmer, Mosedale Gillatt architects and Fellowship holder Ciaran Treanor. All artists have responded in many different ways to Belsay's unique sense of scale. The Belsay contemporary exhibitions are curated for English Heritage by Judith King.
