The Berwick Ramparts Project
The Berwick Ramparts project in 1996 attracted arts audiences from across the world to this border town. Six national and international artists were commissioned to make site-specific work around the historic ramparts. The success of the commissions and the press exposure that it attracted enabled Berwick to be considered as an important new venue for showing contemporary public art that continues today.
The Berwick Fellowship programme began in 1993 and is awarded annually to selected professional artists who have demonstrated an ongoing commitment to developing their practice. This period of reflective time is intended to give artists an opportunity to produce a new body of work in response to this extraordinary border location.
The Berwick Ramparts project was curated by Pippa Coles and funded by English Heritage, Arts Council England, Northern Sights, Henry Moore Foundation and the Elephant Trust.
