This was the residence of Elizabeth Garrett Anderson (1836-1917), the first woman to qualify as a physician and surgeon in Britain and, as Mayor of Aldeburgh, the first woman mayor and magistrate in Britain. The additions of 1904 were made for her and her husband, Skelton Anderson. The house was originally built for Newson L Garrett, Elizabeth's father.
