Probably the best preserved Roman wall fort and certainly the longest continuous stretch of Hadrian's Wall visible today, with the added bonus of being in a picturesque setting.

Sandford Award winner (2008) in recognition of the quality of education offered at the site. The judges said: The site “is ideal for teachers who want their pupils to focus on built remains and develop analytical skills relating to the unravelling of historic evidence”.

Crafty Romans: Meet a Roman Soldier

Make your own piece of Rome to take home and/or come face to face with a Roman soldier in full uniform!  Explore Roman life through a guided tour of the site, handle objects and meet a soldier to learn and ask questions about life in the Roman Army. Three different activity sessions are also available. Making replicas of Roman helmets involves discussion about uniform, armour and weapons; jewellery-making explores dress and wealth and mosaic-making focuses on homes and style. Cost - £100 per 30 pupils for Art and Craft sessions; £4.25 per participant for Meet a Roman Soldier session.
