Making a visit

Here are some of the most frequently asked questions that we get about making a visit to our sites as a learning group.

Can we take part in events happening at the property we want to book?

We are sorry but we can't offer free entry on days when we have special events at properties.

Can we use audio tours?

Audio tours are not recommended for use by learning groups because they have not been designed for this purpose.

Do any properties cater especially for people with disabilities?

Our free Access Guides on buildings and landscapes give details of properties and landscapes with facilities specifically for visitors with disabilities and will help if any of your learners have particular requirements. The guides are also available in Braille, tape, cassette, disk or large print formats from Customer Services on 0870 333 1181.

Do you help with risk assessments?

Our Hazard Information Sheets should help make your risk assessment easy and you are welcome to make a free preliminary planning visit, but please check with your LEA or employer about their own insurance and health and safety requirements. If we are teaching your group on an English Heritage property the session and activities will have been the subject of a risk assessment undertaken by IOSH qualified staff.

What are my responsibilities as group leader?

We carry £5million Third Party Liability (PLI) Insurance Cover for the risks associated with visitors to our sites and will do everything we can to ensure your safety but the ultimate responsibility for your group's safety, conduct and wellbeing during your visit rests with you.

As group leader it is your responsibility to:

- book your visit at least 14 days in advance

- manage the health, safety, conduct and welfare of your group (free preliminary planning visits and Hazard Information Sheets should help make risk assessments easy)

- plan learning activities for the visit

- abide by our ratios of leaders to learners

What happens when the weather's bad?

Visits can go ahead in light rain (cover is available at most properties) but in severe weather conditions properties may have to be closed at short notice for public safety. If in doubt, please contact the property or consult our website before travelling.

What's the ratio of adults to students?

Site permits will indicate any capacity issues at the site you have booked but most properties can take large numbers of learners which can be split into manageable groups. The minimum ratio of adults to students is:

1:6 up to and including Year 3 (8 years and under)
1:15 for all other groups aged under 18 (except for Tintagel
where the ratio is 1:10 for Year 4 upwards, 9-18 years)
