Planning a visit

Here are some of the most frequently asked questions that we get about planning a visit to our sites as a learning group.

How can I find out which properties can be booked?

Visit our homepage and click "Find a property to visit". Opening times may be subject to change. Please check before booking.

How do I find out about the facilities and resources available at the property I want to visit?

Most key properties have toilets, coach parking, a shop, restaurant or tea room, gardens or parks and picnic areas. You can find details on the property pages or discuss the availability of these plus other essential property information such as access and/or capacity issues, special learning facilities, resources and activities when booking by 'phone. Your organisers' pack (sent with your entry permit when your booking is confirmed) will contain full details.

What can we do on our self-led visit?

Our Organisers' Packs and Teachers' Kits (sent with your booking confirmation) contain property information, ideas and illustrations and lots of helpful hints plus links to useful online resources like Heritage Explorer and Heritage Learning magazine

Our historic sites provide inspirational and unique settings for learning where pupils can consolidate and develop personal, emotional and social skills. A well planned visit will support literacy, ICT and numeracy work and cover many different aspects of the National Curriculum in ways which could never be achieved in the classroom alone.

Use our properties to:

- undertake investigations and enquiries

- compare, interpret and analyse different types of evidence

- develop arguments and explanations

- consider, respond to and debate alternative viewpoints

What options are available for learning groups?

- Lead your own visit in your own way (our free organisers' pack, emailed to you when your booking is confirmed, contains information to help you plan your visit).

- Add an English Heritage-led Discovery Visit (available at some properties. at £90 per group). Your organisation will be invoiced directly for the cost of the Discovery Visit.

- Organise your own interpreter using our list of approved education providers. Everyone on the list has relevant insurance, CRB checks and quality checks to enable them to operate effectively and professionally at our properties.
