Front cover of Heritage Counts 2004

Local artist Bren Head on Fylingdales Moor, North Yorkshire. In September 2003, two and a half square kilometres of heather moorland at‘Fylingdales, near Whitby, in the North York Moors National Park, was destroyed by fire. The blaze resulted in the exposure of archaeological evidence from almost every era of human occupation of the moors from theLate Neolithic, which yielded a carved stone with a unique design, to World War II. The prehistoric stone was analysed, recorded and laser scanned and eventually reburied. Its significance is still being assessed, and data from the field archaeology undertaken following the blaze is also helping determine the future management requirements of the area.
