The local historic environment can play a key role in supporting an authority in meeting its core priorities. It can improve the quality of a place, support regeneration and stimulate the local economy.
In order to achieve this, key connections need to be made at the appropriate strategic level. Therefore English Heritage advocates the inclusion of the historic environment in Local Area Agreements, Sustainable Community Strategies (SCSs) and Local Development Frameworks (LDFs).
We have already published guidance on Local Area Agreements, and we are preparing further guidance on SCSs and LDFs. It is hoped that these publications will be read together to ensure that a suitably holistic approach is taken to the role heritage can play in supporting local authority activities.
Local Area Agreements and the Historic Environment
This document explains how heritage can help local authorities to meet an array of targets.
Sustainable Community Strategies
English Heritage is currently developing guidance on embedding the historic environment into Sustainable Community Strategies. This guidance will show how the historic environment can make a real contribution to a wide variety of agendas.
Local Development Frameworks
English Heritage through its role in the planning system, has a key role to play in Local Development Frameworks. English Heritage intends to provide a guidance document on this in early 2011.
