Transport can affect the historic environment in a wide range of ways, some negative but some positive. For example, a new road may risk damaging archaeology or affect the setting of a listed building, or registered park and garden.
On the other hand, a sensitively designed high street, free of unnecessary street clutter such as signs, guardrails and road markings, can be a positive benefit to an historic area.
English Heritage aims to engage with transport developers at an early stage, to assess the impact of new proposals on the historic environment.
By doing this, we aim to bring about change that enhances the historic environment. Where possible, we work with others to look at options that cause little or no damage. We also work with Government policy makers to influence the direction of transport policy to help bring about the best result for the historic environment.
