Advice for Government Historic Estate

The Government Historic Estates Unit (GHEU) is a team in English Heritage providing advice and guidance at a national level to government departments and other public bodies.

Planning cases

GHEU handles statutory planning casework relating to specific sites, including government buildings in Whitehall and the naval bases at Portsmouth and Plymouth. It also deals with all casework relating to Historic Royal Palaces, the Royal Household and the Parliamentary Estate.

Site advice

GHEU gives site-specific advice including:

  • informal advice to departments at an early stage when developing proposals
  • technical advice on repair and conservation of the government historic estate
  • monitoring the condition of buildings at risk and working with departments to find solutions

Information and guidance

GHEU undertakes research and monitors the government historic estate. This work includes:

  • producing a Biennial Conservation Report on the government historic estate
  • maintaining records of the government's historic buildings and monuments
  • publishing conservation guidance for departments
