School Refurbishment

English Heritage's role is to help people understand the value and potential of historic school buildings through publications, guidance and research.

These include:

  • A guidance document, 'Refurbishment of Historic Schools', published with the support of the Department of Children, Schools and Families, which demonstrates the huge potential and flexibility of traditional school buildings through many case studies. A copy can be downloaded from this page or hard copies are available from English Heritage Customer Services.
  • Research results from a recent study commissioned by English Heritage that show even simple repairs and improvements to original sash windows significantly reduce draughts and heat loss. Details of the findings are available from Climate Change and Your Home.
  • A model brief which helps local authorities to undertake a simple but effective assessment of the heritage importance of the schools in their building portfolio. This assessment will identify which buildings need to be dealt with sensitively, and conversely those with little or no heritage significance and where new build proposals may be more appropriate. Having this information ready at the beginning of the planning process will reduce risks and unnecessary mistakes. The model brief can be downloaded on this page, or visit HELM for further information.
