Alongside larger, strategic or thematic research projects, English Heritage research staff carry out specific, targeted pieces of research and fabric analysis on behalf of colleagues to assist with their casework. This work may cover the architectural or construction history of an individual building; the phasing of a complex site; or provide an overview of the development and milestones in the evolution of a building type. The aim of such work is to 'unlock' the potential for refurbishment, re-use or sensitive re-development, or to provide baseline evidence before a conservation programme of repair and re-use is undertaken. Other projects may clarify a complex issue of significance for designation purposes, or provide evidence in a public inquiry.
