The research that English Heritage undertakes or sponsors is prioritised within the framework of the National Heritage Protection Plan, which relates in turn to the priorities of English Heritage's Corporate Strategy.
The National Heritage Protection Plan sets out our high-level strategy going forward for protecting the historic environment, including understanding and indentifying what is important. A series of implementation plans will be published as they are developed over the next few months.
Our Projects and Programmes
Some of our research is undertaken directly by English Heritage's expert staff, while other projects are carried out by external researchers funded through our National Heritage Protection Commissions Programme (NHPC) and through the Aggregates Levy Sustainability Fund (ALSF).
As part of the implementation of our Research Strategy, English Heritage is committed to reporting publicly on the progress of our research programmes and projects. We do this in two ways:
- Details of all projects commissioned from external partners since 1991, and all projects undertaken internally since 2008, are available through our comprehensive online database, SHAPE Online.
- In addition, we publish an annual Research Review (coming soon) which highlights the main achievements of the past year and looks forward to issues and priorities for coming years.
In this way we aim to balance reporting on the overall shape and direction of our research activity with detailed accounts of our individual projects and programmes.
Summary details of projects undertaken by English Heritage's experts between 2005 and 2007 can be downloaded from the right hand side of this page.
Research strategy for 2005 - 2010
'Discovering the Past, Shaping the Future' was English Heritage's Research Strategy and Agenda for the period 2005-2010. This linked pair of documents set out how we managed our research to ensure that our effort and resources were directed towards the questions and issues that were the most pressing for the historic environment during this period. Both documents can be downloaded from the right hand side of this page.
