English Heritage aims to support the development of the necessary skills in the heritage sector so that the historic environment is understood, protected and managed effectively.  We achieve this by developing a range of professional training courses and by supporting the development of guidelines and standards aimed at improving practice. We also co-ordinate bursary schemes. work placements and the development of vocational qualifications to provide a skilled workforce tailored to the changing needs of the heritage sector.

English Heritage runs a number of training schemes. These range from an entry level scheme for trainee gardeners to a series of specialist courses at West Dean College.

HELM Training

Aimed at local authorities and government agencies, these seminars help to raise awareness amongst those outside the heritage sector of the role of the historic environment and the benefits it can bring in achieving targets.
