Grendon Hall, Grendon Underwood, Buckinghamshire

Grendon Hall, Grendon Underwood, Buckinghamshire

This country house was built circa 1882 in the Jacobean style, incorporating a 17th-century staircase. Here a group of servants pose for the photographer in the gardens. There was a strict hierarchy for servants, based on training, responsibility, the amount of contact they had with the house owners, and often gender. The house is now part of HMP Spring Hill. Photograph taken between 1896-1920. Copyright English Heritage.NMR
