Give your Dad a Roman Father’s Day experience
Head to Chesters on 16 and 17 June as costumed performers look on the bright side of Roman life
Visitors to Chesters Roman Fort this Father’s Day weekend can find out What the Romans Did For Us with a look back at some amazing ancient technologies.
Costumed duo Heuristics will take on the roles of a husband and wife living in Northumberland during the Roman occupation, performing in their own specially constructed villa, complete with exotic wall paintings and mosaic floors.
The pair will talk about what life was like for Iden, a local trader who has developed a close relationship with the Romans, visited Rome and taken a Roman wife – Cardia.
Find out about the games the Romans played in their leisure time, discover their clever inventions and see Cardia demonstrating the fashionable cosmetics of the day. Among the highlights are a water clock design from 250 BC, a hodometer for measuring miles, a groma for surveying, a fountain that works without pumps or gravity feed and a temple with doors that work as if by magic.
Jon Hogan from English Heritage said: “Heuristics are great performers who make the subject of Roman technology extremely entertaining. Their magnificent Roman villa gives an impressive insight into how a family of the time would have lived, and how Roman inventions and devices made their lives easier.
“This is a great day out for Father’s Day weekend as all the family will be fascinated to hear how Roman technology changed the face of the ancient world.”
