Discover The Secrets Of Roman Corbridge
A fun-filled weekend for all the family: Saturday 21 July and Sunday 22 July
English Heritage is bringing the Corbridge Lion to life for visitors at ‘Discover the Secrets of Roman Corbridge’ on Saturday 21 July and Sunday 22 July.
English Heritage curator, Georgina Plowright will guide people on three tours to reveal the secrets of Roman Corbridge’s past.
From the Corbridge Lion to a hoard of goods concealed from attacking barbarians, everyone will enjoy a fascinating insight into Roman life, and children can get involved in hands-on entertainment as part of National Archaeology Days.
Jon Hogan, events manager for English Heritage said: “Corbridge Roman town is an ancient site and excavations have revealed many interesting discoveries. The weekend has something for everyone to see and visitors can even walk on the original Stanegate Roman road, which predated Hadrian’s Wall.”
Although King John dug for treasure during his visit to the Tyne the first major campaign of excavation took place in 1906-14.
The extensively excavated remains include many interesting secrets for visitors to discover such as the fountain house with an aqueduct, a pair of granaries and walled military compounds containing barracks, temples, houses and a headquarters building with a ground strongroom.
Studies have shown that the collection of architectural fragments from Corbridge is one of the most important in Roman Britain. A rare collection of stonework has only survived together because the Romans demolished the temples and re-used the pieces in a roadway.
The event is part of the Council for British Archaeology’s National Archaeology Week. National Archaeology Week is a unique chance to discover and explore the archaeological heritage of the United Kingdom. During this nine-day event that runs from 14 - 22 July, people can take part in excavation open days, guided tours, exhibitions, lectures, ancient art and craft workshops and much more.
The tours start at 11am, 1pm and 3pm and will be led by English Heritage curator Georgina Plowright. Pre-booking is advisable by calling 01434 632349.
Corbridge Roman Site is positioned on the north side of the Tyne, ½ mile North West of Corbridge town, off the A69 and is open daily from 10am-5.30pm.
