Take A Tour Through Time At Carlisle Castle

Guided tours throughout the summer

English Heritage is inviting visitors to take a guided tour around the magnificent Carlisle Castle – an atmospheric site with an exciting past.

During its impressive 900-year history, Carlisle Castle has witnessed many fierce conflicts and bloody sieges. The intricate carvings in a small cell, drawn by captives held by Richard III, reveal that the castle was also used as a prison.

Touring visitors will also be shown the legendary ‘licking stones’, which parched Jacobite prisoners desperately licked for moisture in order to stay alive, only to be brutally executed on Gallows Hill.

Jon Hogan, events manager at English Heritage, comments: “Carlisle Castle has been a cornerstone of the history of the area since medieval times. By taking a guided tour, the whole family can learn about the Castle’s amazing past.”

The event is part of the Council for British Archaeology’s National Archaeology Week. National Archaeology Week is a unique chance to discover and explore the archaeological heritage of the United Kingdom. During this nine day event that runs from July 14 – 22, people can take part in excavation open days, guided tours, exhibitions, lectures, ancient art and craft workshops and much more.

Guided tours will run on July 21 & 22, July 28 – 30, August 12, August 18 – 22 and August 25 – 31. The Castle, situated in Carlisle city centre, is open daily from 9.30am-5pm. Tours at 11.30am and 1.30pm. Visitors are advised to pre-book by calling 01228 591922.
