Flying High At Carlisle Castle

Medieval falconry spectacular

Experience the sport of kings from 12pm on Tuesday July 31 and Wednesday August 1 as Carlisle Castle plays host to an amazing display of medieval falconry.

Watch from the castle’s atmospheric grounds as costumed falconers command medieval-style owls, hawks and falcons as they soar through the skies. Visitors can also get up close with static displays of birds of pray.

Jon Hogan, events manager at English Heritage, comments: “Carlisle Castle has been a cornerstone of the area since medieval times. By witnessing the noble sport of falconry, visitors will be given a glimpse of the Castle’s amazing past.”

During its impressive 900-year history, Carlisle Castle has witnessed many fierce conflicts and bloody sieges. The site also houses the legendary ‘licking stones’, which parched Jacobite prisoners desperately licked for moisture in order to stay alive, only to be brutally executed on Gallows Hill.

Admissions: Adults £4.20, Concessions £3.20, Children £2.10. Entry is free for English Heritage members.
