Step Back In Time With The Roman Army

From 11:00am on Sunday August 26 and Monday August 27 at Corbridge Roman Town

Visitors are invited to join the Imperial Roman Army as Corbridge Roman Fort celebrates its history with an action-packed weekend of fun for all the family.

Witness a magnificent duo of Romano-British cavalry soldiers; colourful ranks of Roman foot soldiers and a Centurion as they practice the military skills that were used at the time of the Roman conquest.

Visitors will also be able to see spectacular falconry, with a variety of birds, along with children’s puppets and plenty of hands on fun.

Jon Hogan, events manager at English Heritage, comments: “The Roman Festival is traditionally one of our most popular events. The wide range of activities offered at Corbridge Roman Town will ensure that the whole family has a fantastic day.”

On the pivotal intersection of Roman Dere Street and Stanegate near the Tyne crossing, Corbridge played a vital role in every Roman campaign in northern Britain, with the first forts here founded c. AD 79-85. The extensively excavated remains include a fountain house with an aqueduct, a pair of granaries, and walled military compounds containing barracks, temples, houses and a headquarters building with a belowground strongroom. Visitors can even walk on the original Stanegate Roman road, which predated Hadrian’s Wall and passes through the centre of the site.

The Roman Festival runs from 11:00am on Sunday August 26 and Monday August 27. Admission: Adults £5.60 Concessions £4.40 Children £2.80. English Heritage Members: Adults £1.50 Concessions £1.10 Children 75p.
