Eastern Counties Research Framework Revision

English Heritage summaries. 2006/07

EH Project Number: 4813MAIN
Funded Unit: Essex County Council

The project aims to review and revise the Research Agenda and Strategy of the East of England Regional Research Framework (RRF). The RRF was developed in a process initiated over 10 years ago and led by ALGAO East.  The process started so early it omitted Bedfordshire, a county now brought into the East of England region. The RRF was amongst the first to be published (only that for the Greater Thames Estuary being comparably early (Williams and Brown 1999).  It appeared in two parts: a resource assessment in 1997 (Glazebrook ed.); and a research agenda and strategy in 2000 (Glazebrook and Brown ed.).

The Framework was never intended to be a fixed point, but rather a dynamic process through which the region’s archaeology can be influenced. The Research Agenda and Strategy were intended to be subject to periodic review and revision which this Project now seeks to address.

RESEARCH AIMS
1 To review and revise the existing East of England Research Agenda and Strategy
2 To establish a mechanism that is capable of keeping the Research Framework live and facilitating ongoing revision and review.
RESEARCH OBJECTIVES
1 Identify major projects and key advances that have occurred since the publication of the framework down to 2007.
2 The achievements of the existing research agenda and strategy will be assessed.
3 Consider the research potential of the vast data-sets created post-PPG16 and their accessibility
4 Consider the need for influence outside the world of archaeology
5 Broaden the strategy to include a wider approach to historic environment than was achieved in the original framework.
6 Development of a forward plan (or revised strategy), identifying key areas of research.
7 Consider methodologies for keeping the research framework active and alive.
