New job is a real ‘find’

English Heritage appoints archaeology adviser

Dr Rob Young  Dr Rob Young outside English Heritage's North West regional office, Bessie Surtees House in NewcastleA County Durham man whose lifelong interest in archaeology started with a school trip at just 11 years of age says his new job with English Heritage is a real ‘find’.

Dr Rob Young of Stanhope is now English Heritage’s North East Historic Environment Archaeology Adviser, with responsibility for County Durham and the Tees Valley.

In his new job 53-year-old Rob will be assessing planning applications, scheduled monument consent applications and generally giving archaeological advice.

Rob has worked all over the world from Egypt and the West Indies to Moldova, but his real love has always been British archaeology, and especially the uplands of Northumberland and the North Pennines.

He said: “I’m really looking forward to getting stuck into the casework side of the job, and I hope I can make a bit of a difference in terms of protecting and developing the understanding of the historic environment of County Durham and the Tees Valley.”

After becoming fascinated by archaeology on a visit to Binchester Roman Fort from his Bishop Auckland school as a boy of 11, Rob graduated in archaeology from Cardiff in 1975 and carried out his PhD research at Durham. He’s lectured for more than 20 years, first at Lampeter, University of Wales and then Leicester University. Then five years ago he changed career direction and became archaeologist for Northumberland National Park Authority.

Rob said: “The National Park job gave me a real insight into working in protected landscapes, the planning process and developing community based and ultimately community-led archaeology and history projects.”

Carol Pyrah, English Heritage’s North East planning and development director said: “We’re delighted to welcome Rob to the English Heritage regional team; he brings with him a wealth of valuable experience and knowledge which I’m sure colleagues and partners alike will benefit from. Rob has taken a newly created post at English Heritage which is boosting our capacity to help those who protect and care for the heritage of the North East. This is particularly important at a time of major change in the system for heritage protection.”
