Review of Churches in Heytesbury and Sherborne: Salisbury Diocese
English Heritage summaries. 2007/2008
| EH Project Number: | 5411MAIN |
| Funded Unit: | Keystone Historic Buildings Consultants |
English Heritage is working in partnership with the diocese of Salisbury on a project to review its stock of 77 parish churches in the deaneries of Heytesbury (Wiltshire) and Sherborne (Dorset). There are three strands to the project. The first two – assessing the churches’ community and social value, and exploring their roles as places of mission, ministry and worship – are being conducted by the diocese itself. English Heritage’s role is in the third strand which is the assessment of the historical and architectural importance of the churches in question.
The aim is to produce reports that are not only authoritative in content but are also accessible and meaningful to both clergy and lay people. They will draw out what is most significant about the churches in terms of their history, architecture, setting and fixtures and fittings, and so enable a greater appreciation of their rich and diverse heritage, spanning 900 years from Norman times to the early 20th century.
The project is being conducted for English Heritage by Keystone Consultants of Exeter. The experienced team consists of Dr Geoff Brandwood as Project Manager, assisted by Drs Martin Cherry and John Elliott. The work is scheduled to be complete by February 2009.
