Down House Prepares for Bicentenary!
Down House will be closed from 1st November 2008 – 12th Feb 2009 for work to be undertaken on the site in preparation for the 2009 celebrations.
From February 2009, English Heritage will be celebrating the international importance of Charles Darwin and Down House to mark the 200th anniversary
of Darwin’s birth and the 150th anniversary of the publication of On the Origin of Species, by providing an exciting new interpretation scheme for visitors.
Plans focus on offering an engaging visitor experience in both the house and grounds with the use of new handheld multimedia tours, as well as an exciting new exhibition suite on the first floor of the house, which will give greater access to the Darwin collection and archive.
