History Rewritten at St Mawes Castle

St Mawes Castle  History records that St Mawes Castle surrendered to the Civil War  Parliamentarians “without a shot being fired!” well there was at least one!

In 1937 a cannon ball was found and dated by the Royal Cornwall Museum to the Civil War. Fired away from the castle as a warning shot to intimidate the Royalists, we now have this on display and should be thankful that the Royalist commander surrendered so easily, as today the castle is one of the most perfectly preserved of Henry VIII’s coastal fortresses.
