Celebrating Darwin's 200th anniversary with the Open University

Open University Logo  The Open University has teamed up with English Heritage to celebrate the Darwin bicentenary year and the 150th anniversary of the publication of On the Origin of Species with a series of special events at the Home of Charles Darwin.
 
Whether bringing the family, or coming along on your own, these hands-on taster sessions are suitable for all, and if furthering your education appeals to you there is an added opportunity to discuss course and study options with knowledgeable OU staff on the day.

Spaces for the Open University Events are limited so pre-booking is essential. Please call 0870 333 1181 to book your place.

Evolution Megalab Banded Snail hunt

Down House  Get really close to evolution in this fun two hour activity suitable for all the family.

Did you know that thanks to a common little snail that you can find in your garden, in the park or under a hedge, you can see evolution in action? Join the Open University and take part in a nationally important Banded Snail hunt, which has been developed as part of the Open University’s Evolution Megalab project, and enjoy family focused talks on evolution. 

There are two sessions per day with a maximum capacity of 40 people at each session. Times are:

12noon - 2:00pm

3:00pm - 5:00pm

Little Pots of Horror – an illustrated talk on Carnivorous Plants

Potted Venus Fly Trap  Primarily aimed at adults, this hour long session will explain the different ways in which evolution has given rise to a number of species of carnivorous plants. As well as being able to see “meat eating” plants, including the Venus Fly Trap and the beautiful sundews, in the flesh you’ll also find out more about how they are able to attract, trap and digest their food in this informative illustrated talk.

There are four sessions for this event with a maximum capacity of 20 people at each session. Times are:

11:30am - 12:30pm

12:30pm - 1:30pm

2:30pm - 3:30pm

3:30pm - 4:30pm
