Freedom from the Past

English Heritage and Northamptonshire Black History Association are pleased to announce the launch of their Black History Ruler. The ruler shows images and gives brief histories of six famous black Britons. In 2007, the Freedom from the Past: Long Time Coming project explored issues around the history and legacies of the abolition of the trans-Atlantic slave trade with music, drama, cultural workshops and a performance in Northampton. Everyone involved with the project wanted to commemorate the achievements and contributions made by black Britons over the centuries. The ruler is a fun way to find out more about some amazing people, including Walter Tull the footballer and first black British Infantry Officer and Mary Seacole, the woman who nursed soldiers during the Crimean War.
