The Great Tower at Dover Castle
From August 2009, visit Dover Castle and immerse yourself in the majesty, colour and atmosphere of King Henry II's medieval royal court. Extensive new interpretation, including the rich period dressing of rooms within the Great Tower, will transport visitors back to this significant and turbulent period of English history.
Within the Great Tower, costumed characters and the latest film technology will bring to life
famous historical figures, including Prince John and King Henry II – a powerful, flamboyant man, whose unresting energy and furious rages were allegedly inherited from a demon ancestress.
Visitors will hear the story of the King's infighting family and witness the dynastic struggle for power between Henry and his rebellious sons, bringing to life the family and court politics of one of the most powerful and enigmatic Kings in English history.
The Great Tower opens on 1st August 2009 and is part of a visit to Dover Castle. As opposed to the popular Secret Wartime Tunnels at Dover Castle where admission for groups is by pre-booked guided tour slots only, the Great Tower is a free-flow only attraction and there will be no pre-booking of time slots.
To maintain the medieval immersive atmosphere for all visitors, and to give everyone a truly unique experience - there will be no guiding within the Great Tower as the existing interpretation will lead groups through the tower. However, all groups of young visitors and children should be accompanied by adults when visiting the Great Tower.
