Rievaulx Abbey has the Eco Factor

If you thought organic living was a new trend, visit Rivaulx Abbey on the North Yorkshire Moors and see how thrifty monks knew a thing or two about self sufficiency - more than 900 years ago!

Rievaulx Abbey  Inspired by the monks that once lived on the site, staff at Rievaulx Abbey are now following suit and have planted two vegetable plots at the Cistercian Abbey. The aim is to provide the popular tea room with 'home-grown' summer greens such as chives, lettuce, spring onions and carrots.

The tearoom already has a reputation for serving up delicious, locally sourced Yorkshire treats reflecting the changing seasons.   Groups visiting Rievaulx are advised to prebook space in the tearoom to avoid disappointment.

  • Rievaulx Abbey has its own 'resident' monk available to take groups on guided tours around the atmospheric site. See below for prices and how to book.
  • The site has recently introduced two specially constructed hedgehog houses to encourage local wildlife to stay at this secluded site.
  • Brother Anthony
