Broadsworth Goes Back to War and to the Sea
English Heritage has issued a plea for people to come forward with wartime memories, stories or objects about the Brodsworth Hall Estate in Doncaster, South Yorkshire.
A major 'country house and war' exhibition is being planned for 2011 at the spectacular Victorian mansion but work has started already! A ten-strong team of volunteers working with curators have started the exciting detective work, uncovering clues to track down compelling stories, not just tales of heroic deeds, but also about everyday life on the home front at Brodsworth.
Edna Tagg, from Carcroft, Doncaster, has already contacted English Heritage. Her father John Tyreman was a locomotive driver at Brodsworth Colliery and took the King’s shilling to fight in the First World War. To mark the safe return of soldiers from Brodsworth, hall owner, Charles Thellusson, gave them all a beautiful silver shaving kit. The one presented to John, now a treasured family heirloom, could feature in the exhibition.
- New for 2010: An exhibition centred around the famous 17th-century maritime painting by Backhuysen will allow visitors the opportunity to 'climb into' the painting to understand some of its fascinating history and hidden symbols.
- Group visitors can find out more about the project about the two World Wars and uncover the fascinating collections and stories of the hall with exclusive guided tours which can run in the morning or evening.
