Tintagel Pirate Tale is Winning Yarr-n!
From parrots to peg legs, Tintagel Castle's search to find the best young creative writers in Cornwall has seen more than one hundred young people showcasing their storytelling skills. Amongst all the entries received, eight-year old Juliet Wells from Bodmin scooped the overall prize for her 'Teddy Bear Pirates' story.
The judges felt her tale of a mermaid rescued by teddy bears was an excellent and entertaining yarn, worthy of the top prize of a year's English Heritage membership for her and her family. The competition was held to celebrate the Pirate Tales storytelling events for children that took place at Tintagel Castle.
Tony Rees of English Heritage was given the difficult task of helping to select the winners. "The quality of the stories was astonishing, and it was made even harder to select the winners because of the huge amount of originality and imagination shown. We eventually chose Juliet because we felt her tale of teddy bear treachery was really original, and showed imagination and great flair."
