Improving the visitor experience at Housesteads Roman Fort
A level History students at William Howard Secondary School, Brampton, Cumbria, advised English Heritage and the National Trust on how best to improve the visitor experience at Housesteads Roman Fort on Hadrian's Wall. Housesteads is within the Frontiers of the Roman Empire World Heritage Site, and English Heritage and the National Trust have been working together on an extensive community consultation to gather people's views about how the site can be made more accessible and engaging, particularly for young people.
English Heritage's Learning Project Officer, Nicola Bell, visited the school, taking real and replica Roman objects from Housesteads' handling collection, so that the students could literally get to grips with things which Romans used in their everyday lives. The students gave their views on the sort of activities they would be interested in taking part in at Housesteads, if they visited in their own time rather than as a school visit.
