England's coastal zone contains an important legacy of historic assets including, in particular, a complex array of archaeological remains. Many of these fragile and irreplaceable remains were originally constructed on dry land or stable inlets and cliff tops. A combination of rising sea levels and maritime erosion over the centuries and millennia threaten to destroy many of these sites, and the information about our heritage encapsulated in them.

In order to improve the management of these remains and to identify priorities for future survey initiatives, English Heritage and the former Royal Commission on the Historical Monuments of England (RCHME) commissioned a desk-based nation-wide assessment of coastal archaeology from the Universities of Reading and Southampton. The survey was primarily concerned with the archaeological remains situated above the low-tide mark, particularly with those in the inter-tidal zone. This document presents the background to the survey and summarises its conclusions and recommendations for reference by those responsible for coastal zone management and those with an interest in the coast.
