Learning aid speaks volumes
English Heritage has come over all Jackanory with the launch of its latest education initiative.
Designed to support the National Curriculum, ‘The Very Big Book of Castles’ is an inspirational and fun new learning resource for families, teachers and young schoolchildren in the region.
The lavishly-illustrated book is now available at seven North East castles – Aydon, Barnard, Etal, Norham, Warkworth, Dunstanburgh and Prudhoe – and contains information and activities which aim to help children learn more about the castle they are visiting; how it was defended and what life was like inside.
Developed by English Heritage education officer, David Walmsley, in partnership with a focus group of local teachers, ‘The Very Big Book of Castles’ is designed for both indoor and outdoor use and standing at around four feet high, is large enough to be viewed by an entire class of schoolchildren.
Of the new learning aid, David, said: “The Very Big Book is an extremely exciting venture for us and initial feedback from families and school groups has been extremely positive.
“We have developed an innovative educational tool which we very much hope will enhance the learning experience for youngsters by providing an enjoyable and interactive insight into the history of the North East’s most magnificent and treasured castles.”
A free colour booklet, which enables teachers make full use of the Very Big Book, before, during and after their castle visit, is also available from English Heritage.
