Dover Castle Access Room
At the Dover Castle store we now have a small display area, with changing displays from our collection.
Stores have traditionally been hidden from public view, as have the objects they contain. This is for various reasons: collections are not always able to be displayed - especially archaeological collections, which contain boxes and boxes of single types of items such as broken pottery. These do not make very fascinating viewing, but are invaluable for research as they can give clues as to where people were living, how many there are likely to have been etc. They are also an important way of dating other objects found with them in the same layer of earth. Our stores also contain items which are too valuable or fragile to display on site, or cannot be displayed on site because there is no museum.
The Access Room has been created as a small display area to give visitors a taste of what our collections are, and to display some of the items we would not otherwise be able to. It is also open by appointment, to researchers who are using our archive, and the general public with a specific interest.
The Access Room is open to the public on the first Friday of every month, or by appointment. Please call 01304 208 270.
