Jane started as Inspector of Ancient Monuments for London on April 7th 2008.
From August 1999, Jane advised on all aspects of archaeological science in London, from pre-application enquiries to research and publication. Jane’s background is in Environmental Archaeology and she has spent the last decade researching the inner Thames estuary landscape, sea level change and human occupation.
Jane investigated the effectiveness of preservation in situ; specifically chemical and hydrological changes in the burial environment, and helped organise the PARIS (preservation of archaeological remains in situ) conferences. Jane has contributed to written guidance, including environmental archaeology, geoarchaeology and Christian burials, and several publications.
The science advisor’s role included providing training days for the archaeological community, which have included geoarchaeology, human bones, archaeobotany, ceramic analysis and absolute dating.
