Stonehenge World Heritage Site Management Plan

Cover of the WHSMP – The Stonehenge WHS Management Plan was published in 2000 by English Heritage The Stonehenge WHS Management Plan provides a strategy to conserve and manage the site for future generations. It covers the whole WHS landscape (2,600 hectares around Stonehenge). Based on a detailed assessment of the key features and issues, the Plan outlines long-term objectives and a prioritised programme of action.

The Stonehenge WHS Plan seeks to balance the primary aim of protecting the archaeological landscape with other interests such as access, farming, local interests and nature conservation.

The WHS Plan was published in 2000 after consultation with landowners, the local community, statutory bodies and other interested parties. Its preparation was led by English Heritage and overseen by a steering group of stakeholders.  It has been endorsed by the UK government and adopted as Supplementary Planning Guidance by Salisbury District Council. It is recognised by all parties as the overarching strategy for a sustainable management of the World Heritage Site.
