    Scary man

Our Haunted Heritage podcasts are recorded, presented and produced by Jamie Wilkinson, a familiar voice to many from his BBC local radio programmes throughout the North. No trickery has been used during their production, and any sounds you hear, and indeed, the reactions of the participants, were recorded live.

“I’ve recorded all kinds of radio shows in the past, but heading out to these sites after dark was a very different experience,” says Jamie.  “The first podcast we recorded was at Clifford’s Tower, where all kinds of bizarre things happened during the night, from the batteries draining within minutes in my sound recorder, to the fascinating results of a table-tipping exercise.  You try to rationalise what happened afterwards, but I can’t explain so many of the things that happened that night!”

Parental advisory: although our Podcasts do not contain any bad language, some of the events that took place may be frightening or disturbing for children.  These podcasts are therefore not recommended for children below the age of 12.

    Clifford’s Tower

A tower has stood on the mound at the Eye of York for centuries.  Originally a wooden tower stood there, but this was burned down in 1190 when York’s jews sought sanctuary in the tower.  Rather than surrender to the angry mob below, they committed mass suicide, setting the tower on fire and burning it to the ground.  The stone tower which replaced it is said to ‘bleed’, with blood seeping out of the masonry on the internal walls...

    Helmsley Castle

With its keep overlooking the picturesque market town, you might imagine that Helmsley Castle would be a quiet and tranquil place.  However, there are stories of pixies dancing around the local countryside, and a grey lady, who has been seen walking across the grounds.  Female staff also report unexplained cold spots on steps in the Tudor mansion house when they are locking up each evening.

The paranormal investigation at Helmsley Castle was undertaken by the Darlington Ghostwatch Society.

    Scarborough Castle

Scarborough Castle’s 2000 year history is reflected in the reported sightings of ghosts who have been seen there; a Roman soldier near the old signal station, the headless corpse of Piers Gaveston – a close friend of Edward II – trying to lure people to their death over the Castle’s battlements, and even the wife of the Master Gunner – which could explain the uneasy feeling felt by staff in the Master Gunner’s House – now home to a new exhibition.

The paranormal investigation at Helmsley Castle was undertaken by the Darlington Ghostwatch Society and Scarborough-based Abbey Ghost Hunters.
