Heritage Works: The use of historic buildings in regeneration (669 Kb)
The British Isles, both urban and rural, has some of the finest architectural heritage in the world. As the popularity of certain styles wavered in past decades, buildings such as Victorian terraces or the warehouses that saw the birth of the industrial revolution were seen as symbols of decline and social deprivation. More recently, the true cultural, social and economic value of buildings such as these has finally been recognised. Using the historic environment as an asset, and giving it new life, has been one of the cornerstones of the economic and social revival of our towns and cities.

Historic farm buildings: constructing the evidence base (2783 Kb)
Despite the undoubted historic, scenic and economic importance of the historic farm building stock, there is a remarkable lack of basic information on its size, character, condition and trajectory of change. Without such basic information, informed and sensitive management of change and effective targeting of scarce resources will not be possible. This monograph, describing work commissioned from the University of Gloucestershire by English Heritage and the Countryside Agency, is a first step towards addressing this information deficit.

Historic Landscape Characterisation in England and a Hampshire case study (1133 Kb)
This paper describes English Heritage's national programme of 'historic landscape characterisation' carried out by local government. Historic Landscape Characterisation is a new GIS-based archaeological method for defining the historic and archaeological dimension of the present-day landscape. It can explain how and why the landscape looks as it does, identify landscape's 'time-depth' and facilitate sustainable management. One of the earlier Historic Landscape Characterisation projects, in Hampshire, is presented as an example.
