Durham ALSF NMP

Great Isle (NMR17251/9) Durham locationThe Durham ALSF NMP project - also known as Durham - assessment of archaeological resource in aggregate areas (4778) - is part of a wider project carried out in partnership with Durham County Council and Archaeological Research Services with funding from English Heritage via the Aggregates Levy Sustainability Fund (ALSF). It aims to evaluate the archaeological resource and the impact of aggregate extraction in the area of the Magnesian Limestone Escarpment in the east of the county. In spite of the potential for such geology to reveal archaeological sites as cropmarks, and the presumption of an emphasis on such sites, the project thus far has identified numerous medieval sites surviving as earthworks.
