Warwickshire ALSF NMP

Warwickshire logo Warwickshire locationThe Warwickshire ALSF NMP (4681) project is sampling areas within the county that have known potential for aggregate extraction and those that could have with funding from the Aggregates Levy Sustainability Fund (ALSF).   Interesting features recorded so far include parkland features associated with Middleton Hall and possible charcoal burning platforms.

Middleton Hall - NMP extractAt Middleton Hall a circular ditch with radiating arms appears to be a form of landscape feature associated with the nearby hall and possibly dates to the middle of the 17th century. More elaborate patte d'oie or goose foot schemes can be seen in Knyff and Kips illustrations of grand houses in Britannia Illustrata. Underlying the ornamental feature are areas of medieval ploughing and what appear to be late prehistoric field boundaries.
